A Walled Garden

Admiring the play of

Light as it fades

A walled garden

Inside my heart

Where blooms are tendered

With my attention

Such gentle feedings

To make the blossoms swell

My strong fingers

In the soil

Lonely work at times

But the gate, locked as it is,

Has a key I gave in safekeeping

The air is perfumed

With the promise

Of my desire

And who will steal

To visit with me

To make such love

And steal, oh steal

Pleasure from

One another

If someone comes

I will wait and guess

Their intention

Not by word

But action

For mine is to build

A garden and

Tend the hardiest plants

With the same love

As the tenderest shoots
