The Kids Would Understand

She heard them shuffling outside. 

Her callused fingers slipped fresh rounds

 into the clip as

 she breathed with care.

Eight bodies so far

All dressed the same

Left handed

Got the lyrics wrong

To songs on purpose

‘I love you honey

But please leave 

Me alone’

The door flew open

He raised his gun

The kids

Would understand
